![]() But it's the process of discovery which is part of what makes Mario games so much fun. But Mario games also usually have a bunch of stuff that only appears in one game, heck some stuff only ever appears in one area. There are elements that are common to every Mario game, and obviously you want to include them. Like when you get to Donut Secret 2, and get a glimpse of Valley of Bowser, it just blows your mind. Mario World had switch palaces, the cape, Yoshi, secret exits, bonus stages, item reserve, message blocks, Ghost Houses, a coherent world map, Star World, top secret area, spin jumping, running up walls, tic tac toe.Įven if a secret is just a one off thing it really leaves an impact. Everyone remembers the Kuribo Shoe and the Giant World, and World 8's battleships + hand traps are iconic. And even though it was a long game it never stopped introducing things. Mario 3 had a branching world map, loads of new powerups + enemies, scrolling stages, goal post mini-games, fortresses, hammer bros on the map, complex moving platforms, p-switches, you could throw koopa shells to break bricks, etc. What makes the old mario games so memorable (and I think, what makes some of the newer ones less memorable) is that they were really good and introducing new things for a player to figure out. That being said, you *do* need to have something interesting and new about the game design. That's what a lot of indie games do, and sometimes it works, sometimes it feels tacked on and hurts the game experience. I'm going to say, I don't believe the game *has* to have some gimmick / new gameplay mechanic to succeed. Even I do not have much experience with programming. I want to make a different and fun fangame. ![]() Thanks for the opinion, and yes, that's exactly my purpose here. I suggest going the SMBD route, using a seemingly small and simple idea that ends up drastically changing how you play.Īs it is, this game is good (-ish). Dimensions both games that took the classic Mario concept and did something new with it. Take a look at Toadette Strikes Back or Super Mario Bros. This little Hello game is nice and all, but you need something to set it apart from other Mario fangames. I can't wait to see what you do with the finished project! Remember you gotta do something different. But, from what I can tell, there's a lot of polish to be added here, still. I didn't play past Level 2, because my laptop lagged out. I fall when I walk in front of the tree? Because I somehow fall in front of the tree when the hill's behind the tree? Logic? I can jump on the platform and walk on it, and then. Flying upwards feels way too stiff you mash the jump button and hardly get any lift at all. But can you maybe not freeze-frame the game while the passage is shown? Because I went into the secret passage near the start of the first level, got a running start to make the jump, and subsequently slipped into the pit because the freeze-frame thing happened to show Mario leaving the passage, and I couldn't jump. a few pointersįirst of all, the hidden passages. Not bad so far I assume this is just a test of the physical engine and a few features from your finished game, so. Nothing more than a super polished Hello clone. You may have used those polishing rags very well, but it happens to be a very polished Hello clone. Purplian Electric Aura, the Techno Catalyst, Dimenswitching, etc. It needs a core game mechanic that isn't jumping. It's a good game, but it's lacking greatness. This seems like something Nintendo would make.unfortunately not in the good way. I personally crave more from my fangames, but if you are looking for a good NSMB styled game, I'd say this'll work.įeels like a nintendo game. It's polished and beautiful looking, but it's so generic and boring. I feel completely ambivalent towards this game. With level design so easy and bland it makes New Super Mario Bros look like Ghosts n Goblins and and ideas so dull and unoriginal that they make New Super Mario Bros 2 look like a Picasso piece, Super Mario 2D Universe is just not worth playing.Ī fun demo to enjoy, and the future project will be much more amazing. Super Mario 2D Universe is one of those games which is all style, zero substance.
